about

This album is a live recording of the concert Chi-Da that took place at Audioguy, Seoul, Korea on July 19, 2019. Internationally acclaimed Pansori master Il-dong Bae, who is known for his volcanic vocalization that matches the energy of waterfall, joined the quartet along with contemporary interdisciplinary artist and cellist JI Park and award-winning drummer Soo Jin Suh, a leader of Chordless Quartet and a member of Near East Quartet that released a recent record under ECM. The concert Chi-Da was freely improvised with little to no pre-existing compositional materials and the musicians coming together for the first time at the soundcheck right before the concert.
The music was being formed on the spot relying on each performer’s musicality and caliber and as a result of the accumulated efforts that each of the musicians had throughout the years of their practice. Pianist/composer/improviser Eunhye Jeong perceives composition in the broader sense. That includes the improvisatory quality derived from compositional indeterminacy and predetermined sonic images and shapes that are not written in conventional Western notation. More importantly, she believes the liveliness, the vigor and life force carried out in a live performance adds the crucial dimension to music-making.
The sonic contents resonate through each being (a performer and her instrument as a whole) and collide to create and materialize a new sonic field, creating a juxtaposition at times. The Chi-Da Quartet believes that one can find cosmos out of a seemingly chaotic array of music, and actualize “和而不同”, one of Confucius teachings meaning ‘one does seek for harmony not homogenous unity’.
